OPENING OF U.N. SESSION LEADS TO NEW DEMONSTRATIONS

SOVIET FLAG PUBLICLY BURNED AND TORN

NEW YORK. - The opening of the fifteenth session of the General Assembly of United Nations on September 20, which was attended by the infamous communist leaders headed by Nikita Khrushchev, gave rise to new demonstrations by the people of New York. As on Sunday, the Ukrainians again were prominent in the massive demonstration near the United Nations headquarters.

Although Tuesday was a normal working day, it did not interfere with the number of people who took part in the protestation, since many firms and establishments, including the Ukrainian National Association and the administration of Svoboda allowed their employees to quit work at noon and join in the demonstration if they wished.

The Ukrainian group which was the greatest in number among the marchers conducted itself in an orderly fashion, carrying placards, and singing patriotic and religious songs. At one point however, a misunderstanding with the police on duty occurred. Unwittingly, some Ukrainians carried their placards on sticks, which was against the express police order. When the police insisted that the sticks be removed and broken up, some demonstrators, mainly women, did not want to comply, and this led to a minor clash between the police and the demonstrators.

Later, a young Ukrainian, 19-year-old Michael Kostryka from Astoria, Queens, pulled out a Soviet flag and attempted to burn it with matches. Again the police objected, and finally had to remove Kostryka forcefully from the scene. The flag, meanwhile was torn to shreds by other demonstrators. That evening, while Nicholas Y. Pidgorny, Secretary of the Communist Party of Ukraine, and Kirill T. Mazurov, Premier of Belorussia, were returning from the U.N. headquarters, some people threw eggs in their direction, reported the police.

Other demonstration incidents involved the Balcan and the Latin people and their respective delegations.
