Democrats Give Young People Major Campaign Role

An aggressive campaign among young voters has been drawn up in Kennedy-Johnson headquarters and is now going full steam ahead.

A five-pronged program of Young Voters Activities has been created for the Kennedy-Johnson campaign, with Dick Murphy of Maryland, Director of the Young Democratic Division of the Democratic National Committee, serving as Campaign Coordinator for Young Voters Activities. These will include the regular Young Democratic Clubs, the Young Democratic National Student Federation, the Students for Kennedy-Johnson, the Teen-Dems for Kennedy-Johnson and a committee to recruit young adults for the Citizens organization. Roy Shafer of Pennsylvania, President of the Young Democratic Clubs of America, will serve as chairman of the Coordinating Board, which will supervise young people's activities.

Students for Kennedy-Johnson - an arm of Citizens for Kennedy-Johnson - was created in August to augment the activities of the regular student Young Democratic Clubs, and to enable Independents, Republicans and unaffiliated Democrats to work actively for Senators Kennedy and Johnson. Dale Carlisle, former student body president at Idaho and senior law student at George Washington University, has been named coordinator.

"Never have we had a candidate with such a terrific appeal to young voters." Such was the unanimous verdict of Young Democratic representatives who have just returned from a series of nationwide student and youth gatherings across the country. Everywhere our student representatives, headed by Chuck Manatt of Iowa, National Student Young Democratic chairman, reported that they were swamped with requests for information on how to start the Students for Kennedy-Johnson Club.
