Rights activists in Ukraine call for support of Helsinki group
NEW YORK, N.Y. - Rights activists in Ukraine have called for all-out support of the Ukrainian Helsinki monitoring group's activities, pointing to the group's paramount importance in today's political climate in the Soviet Union.
The call was made in memorandum published in the latest issue of the Information Bulletin of the Kiev Public Group to Promote Implementation of the Helsinki Accords.
Information Bulletin No. 10, composed of 41 typewritten pages, was received here in the West by the External Representation of the Ukrainian Helsinki Group.
The memorandum was signed by Vitaliy Kalynychenko, Ivan Kandyba, Zinoviy Krasivsky, Yaroslav Lesiv, Volodymyr Malynkovych, Oksana Meshko, Petro Rozumny, the Rev. Vasyl Romaniuk, Ivan Sokulsky, Vasyl Stus, Vyacheslav Chornovil and Stefania Shabatura.
In addition to the memorandum, the Information Bulletin contains statements by new members of the Kiev Helsinki watch group.
In his statement Chornovil stressed that the Helsinki group movement is the logical continuation of the national-democratic activity of the "Shestydesiatnyky," who did not limit themselves to cultural activity.
