Philly committee suggests greetings be sent to Walter Polovchak
PHILADELPHIA - The Human Rights for Ukraine Committee here has appealed to the Ukrainian community to send cards and Christmas greetings to Walter Polovchak, the Ukrainian boy whose legal battle to remain in the United States despite the wishes of his parents is currently in appellate court. According to Antonia Duffy, a member of the committee, the boy's attorney, Julian Kulas, has agreed to allow his office to be used as a mailing address.
While he awaits the decision of the courts, young Polovchak is staying with foster parents in the Chicago area. Mr. Kulas has told reporters that the boy constantly worries about being forced to return to the Soviet Union against his will. The committee feels that the Ukrainian community, by sending Christmas cards, can alleviate some of the loneliness Walter must feel and, as Ms. Duffy notes, "show him that he is not alone and unsupported - and orphan in a foreign land."
Cards and notes may be sent to: Walter Polovchak, c/o Julian Kulas, 2236 W. Chicago Ave., Chicago, Ill. 60622.
In addition, a defense fund has been set up to help defray some of the legal costs incurred in the case. Contributions may be mailed to: Defense Fund for Walter Polovchak, Security Savings and Loan, 936 North Western Ave., Chicago, Ill. 60622.
