1980: an overview
Appointments
Several Ukrainians were appointed this past year to important government and academic positions in the United States and Canada. Among them were:
Myroslaw Smorodsky, a New Jersey attorney, who was appointed a public member of the U.S. delegation to the Madrid Conference by President Jimmy Carter.
Julian Kulas, a Chicago attorney, was named to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council. The council is charged with overseeing educational, commemorative and investigative actions related to the Holocaust.
Dr. Albert A. Kipa, a college professor from Pennsylvania, was appointed on March 30 to the National Advisory Council on Ethnic Affairs Studies. Dr. Kipa, who was born in Kiev, was the first Ukrainian appointed to the council.
Laurence G. Decore, an Edmonton lawyer, was appointed chairman of the Canadian Consultative Council on Multiculturalism on April 17. The council advises federal agencies on multiculturalism programs and policies. Mr. Decore is also the president of the Ukrainian Canadian Professional and Business Federation.
Dr. Paul Magocsi, formerly of the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute, was elected to head the Chair of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Toronto. Mr. Magosci's appointment created a furor among certain Ukrainian students and academics at the university, who charged that there were certain hiring irregularities in Dr. Magosci's appointment.
