"Taxi" episode slanders Orthodox
CHICAGO - In a sharp letter to NBC Chairman Grant Tinker, UNA Supreme Vice-President Myron B. Kuropas protested a recent episode of "Taxi" during which the wife of an unfaithful husband is advised by a priest that the only way she can expiate the sin of her husband in the eyes "of the Orthodox Church" is to commit adultery with one of his friends.
Condemning the episode as "a blasphemous insult to the religious beliefs" of Orthodox UNA'ers, Dr. Kuropas demanded to know what NBC planned to do to rectify the slur.
"Most distressing to me," concluded Dr. Kuropas, "is the fact that such a blatant attempt to denigrate the faith of millions of Americans escaped the attention of responsible people at NBC prior to airing. What motivated your program directors to believe that such sleazy sacrilege was humorous?"
Dr. Kuropas is advising UNA members familiar with the episode to write their letters of protest directly to the NBC chairman, 3000 Alameda Ave., Burbank, Calif. 91523.
According to the Rev. Dr. Miltiades B. Efthimiou of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of North and South America, who spoke with the NBC vice-president regarding the matter, only a "visible protest" would assure the Orthodox community of America that similar incidents are not repeated in the future.
Among the groups demanding an apology from NBC is the Illinois Consultation on Ethnicity in Education, which is chaired by Edwin Cudecki of the Copernicus Foundation. The UNA is one of the ethnic organizations affiliated with the ICEE.
