1988: A LOOK BACK
Deaths in the community
During 1988, the Ukrainian community was saddened by the deaths of several
of its more illustrious members. Among them were the following:
- Dr. Steven Sawchuk, 71, pediatrician and prominent Ukrainian Orthodox
Church activist - January 9.
- John Fritz, 62, chief of the Jersey City Police Department and a 36-year
veteran of that city's police force - February 7.
- Russell Kowalyshyn, 69, former Pennsylvania state legislator - April
17.
- Wasyl Palidwor, 94, participant of Ukrainian liberation struggle, prominent
Ukrainian community activist - August 8.
- Mykola Lukash, 68, prominent Soviet Ukrainian translator of literary
works - August 29.
- Roman Kozak, 40, former rock editor of Billboard magazine and author
of a book about the New York rock club CBGB - October 13.
- Gregor Kruk, 77, renowned Ukrainian sculptor widely recognized in European
art world - December 5.
