Awarded Ph.D. in somatics
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Katja Pylyshenko successfully defended her Ph.D. dissertation in January and was officially awarded a doctorate in somatics at graduation ceremonies at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, on June 7.
Her dissertation, "The Experience of Knowledge: A Post-Modern Somatic Approach" treats the subject of holistic (the incorporation of mind and body) education as an alternative to the prevailing thought and method in modern education.
Last year, while still working on her doctoral dissertation, Dr. Pylyshenko was accepted into the highly acclaimed dance department at OSU to start work on an M.A. in dance. She considers her choreographic project for the M.A., which she hopes to complete within a year, as another component of her written doctoral dissertation.
Dr. Pylyshenko is a graduate of The American University, where she received a B.A. in international relations and economics, and of the University of Georgia, where she obtained an M.A. in political science.
Upon her acceptance into the OSU graduate program, Dr. Pylyshenko was awarded a full university fellowship for 1992-1993 and since 1993 holds a graduate teaching assistantship. She was the recipient of numerous awards and scholarships during her undergraduate years, and currently has been nominated for an OSU teaching award. During her graduate studies, Dr. Pylyshenko presented several scholarly papers at academic conferences, one of which was selected as Outstanding Graduate Research Paper.
As a member of the Ukrainian community, Dr. Pylyshenko has been active in Plast in Rochester, N.Y., and as, Ukrainian dance instructor and counselor at dance camps at Soyuzivka, in Kerhonkson, N.Y., and in Port Jervis and Brockport, N.Y. She was instrumental in rejuvenating the Ukrainian Student Organization at OSU and continues to serve as its vice-president.
Many central Ohioans learned about the art of pysanka-making through her course at the OSU Creative Arts Program, and since arriving in Columbus she has been helping the Ukrainian Cultural Association of Ohio by demonstrating how to make pysanky at the yearly Columbus International Festival.
Dr. Pylyshenko is the daughter of Profs. Irma and Mirko Pylyshenko of Brockport State University of New York, Brockport, N.Y. She is a member of UNA Branch 285.
Named V-P/GM of Co-Steel Inc.
MIDDLETOWN, N.J. - Co-Steel Inc. has appointed George Mischenko as vice-president and general manager of its Co-Steel Raritan subsidiary located in Perth Amboy, N.J.
Mr. Mischenko has been with Co-Steel Raritan since its start-up in 1979, most recently as vice-president of steel production. Previously he worked for the United States Steel Corp. (USX) in Chicago, in various management positions from 1969 to 1979. In his new position he is responsible for the complete operation of North America's most cost-efficient electric steel production and rod mill.
At its plants in Canada, the United States and Europe, Co-Steel manufactures and markets a variety of steel products used principally in construction, automotive, appliance and equipment industries.
Mr. Mischenko is a graduate of the University of Illinois, with a degree in mechanical analysis and design.
In the last three years, he was able to establish Ukraine as a major source of raw materials. Between $5 million and $15 million of pig iron has been imported annually for the New Jersey plant.
Mr. Mischenko is a member of UNA Branch 172, treasurer for the Committee for Aid to Ukraine (Central New Jersey Branch), and a member of American Friends of the Odessa Philharmonic Orchestra. In the past he served on the board of directors of St. Andrew's Orthodox Credit Union and as vice-president of the Parents Committee of St. Andrew's Ukrainian School. He was also a member of the ODUM youth organization and the Ukrainian Orthodox League.
He served as a director of American Iron and Steel Engineers (Eastern Section) and is currently a member of the American Management Association, American Iron and Steel Institute, Wire International Association, American Iron and Steel Engineers, and Iron and Steel Society.
He, his wife, Victoria, and daughters, Christine and Natalie, live in Middletown, N.J.
