Manor College receives gift from Wawriw estate

JENKINGTOWN, Pa. - Manor Junior College received the second largest gift from an individual contributor in its history.

The estate of Rose and Joseph Wawriw donated $236,706, to be added to the Rose and Joseph Wawriw Memorial Scholarship Charitable Trust Fund, established in 1988, following the death of the college's longtime friend, Rose Wawriw.

With this additional donation, the Wawriw charitable trust equals more than $1.2 million and has allowed many Manor students to attain scholarship funds.

"The college, and the students here, are still benefiting from the extreme generosity of someone whose relationship to Manor and its founders dates back to the beginning," said Sister Mary Cecilia OSBM, president of Manor Junior College.

Mrs. Wawriw had been a friend to the Sisters of St. Basil the Great, founders of Manor Junior College, since she and her husband ran the St. Basil Orphanage at Seventh and Parish streets in Philadelphia. During the 1930s and 1940s, the couple donated food to the orphanage from the Wawriw Meat Market, which was located in the Fairmount section of Philadelphia. Mrs. Wawriw became a friend of the college and an annual donor.

"This gift tops off a highly successful fiscal year for Manor's development program, which has attracted significant funding from various government sources," said Frank DeMarchi, director of development and alumni relations. "With educational institutions today in need of additional scholarship money, donations such as the Wawriw contribution prove invaluable," he added.
