Manor offers programs in top occupations

JENKINTOWN, Pa. - Offering programs - or programs that lead to - eight of the top 25 fastest growing occupations, Manor Junior College's curriculum remains on the cutting edge, meeting and anticipating society's current and future educational needs.

A government study published by the Department of Commerce Bureau of Labor Statistics projects what will be the fastest growing occupations from the year 1994 to 2005.

Among the top 25 are several programs offered by Manor Junior College, including pre-physical therapy, human services, pre-occupational therapy, paralegal, medical record technician, dental hygiene, expanded functions dental assisting and systems analyst.

Recognizing the growing need for dental hygienists, Manor started its dental hygiene program one year ago with overwhelming response. Manor's Expanded Functions Dental Assisting (EFDA) Program, one of only two in the state, survives today because in 1995 Manor led the fight - along with Sen. Stewart Greenleaf - for a law protecting the state certifications of EFDAs across the state.

Three years ago, Manor started its associate degree program in health care management, which prepares students for many non-clinical entry-level positions in the health care services market and can lead to a career as a medical records technician - number 15 on the bureau's study.

Manor's Allied Health/Science Transfer Program affords students the opportunity to begin an education toward careers in physical therapy (number eight in the study) and occupational therapy (number 11). After earning an associate degree at Manor, students can transfer to a four-year institution carrying all of their credits.

Nearly 100 percent of students graduating Manor as paralegals (number 14 in the study) find employment, often through their externships, which is a requirement of Manor's program (as opposed to an elective, as with many other paralegal programs offered in the area).

Manor's associate in arts degree program in human services (number 10 in the study), offers students the opportunity to either immediately pursue careers in public welfare, youth and adult corrections and with mental health or alcohol/drug abuse treatment facilities; or to transfer to a four-year institution to pursue bachelor's degrees in psychology, sociology, recreational therapy or mental health technology.

Finally, the associate degree in business administration/computer science is designed to prepare students for entry-level positions as junior programmers, personal computer support staff or systems analysts (number three in the government study).

Manor Junior College offers students enrolled in the aforementioned programs personalized attention in small classes, with a 1:8 student-teacher ratio; a high percentage of post-graduate placement; and the ability to transfer to many of the area's four-year institutions as juniors, carrying all of their credits so no time is lost on the way to graduation.

Manor Junior College is a two-year, private, co-ed Catholic institution - founded in 1947 by the Ukrainian Sisters of St. Basil the Great - located in Jenkintown, Pa. For additional information regarding academic programs, call (215) 884-2216.
