Stus award to be presented
CAMBRIDGE, Mass.: The PEN New England Freedom-to-Write Committee presents "The Cultures of Poetry" on Sunday, May 16, 5:30-7:30 p.m., at The Bunting Institute, 34 Concord Ave..
Featured poets are: Marjorie Agosin (Chile), Nguyen Ba Chung (Vietnam), Fred Marchant (U.S.) moderator, Nuala Ni Dhomhnail (Ireland) and Patrick Sylvain (Haiti).
The event will open with the presentation of the 1999 Annual Vasyl Stus Freedom-to-Write Award to Bosnian poet Ferida Durakovic. The award, which is named in honor of one of Ukraine's most prominent poets, recognizes an international writer who has struggled in the face of oppression and brutality to make his or her voice heard.
Ferida Durakovic is the author of numerous collections of poetry, most recently "Heart of Darkness" (White Pine Press). She serves as general secretary of PEN Sarajevo, a branch of PEN founded just as the war began, which Ms. Durakovich maintained while the city was under siege. Ms. Durakovic will be introduced at the event by poet Christopher Merrill.
