- NEW YORK: "Painted Prayers," an exhibit of large-scale contemporary
icons by Christina Saj, will be on view February 1-25. The opening reception
is on Thursday, February 3, at 5-8 p.m. at the James Chapel, Union Theological
Seminary, 3041 Broadway at 121st Street. The public is invited for meditations

- NEW YORK: The Embroidery Course at The Ukrainian Museum is an eight-session
course, which opens February 5 and runs on Saturdays through April 1. Beginners
can learn the rudiments of embroidery, and those proficient in the craft
can expand their skills. Students start with basic cross-stitch and advance
to little-known complicated stitches, as well as intricate cut-work techniques.
The course is taught by embroidery expert Lubow Wolynetz, who also explores
the history, evolution of styles, techniques, colors, threads and fabrics
used in traditional Ukrainian embroidery. Open to adults and children over
age 10. Time: 1-3:30 p.m. Fee: $60, adults; $50, students over 16 and seniors;
$30, children age 10-16. Museum members receive 15 percent discount. Reservations

- DANBURY, Conn.: "Songs of Love and Faith," a benefit concert
by the Yevshan Ukrainian Choral Ensemble, Alex Kuzma, musical director,
will feature Ukrainian liturgical, classical and folk music. The program
begins at 2 p.m. at the Ives Concert Hall at Western Connecticut State
University, White Street in Danbury. Proceeds to benefit the Holy Trinity

- CAMBRIDGE, Mass.: The Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute presents
the inaugural Zenovia Sochor Parry Memorial Lecture to be delivered by
Ashton B. Carter, Ford Foundation Professor of Science and International
Affairs, John F. Kennedy School of Government, on the topic "Ukraine
and U.S. Foreign Policy." The lecture is at 4-6 p.m. in the Thompson

- HOUSTON: The Spivayemo Men's Chorale and the Eastern Christian Choral
Society from Houston's Institute for Eastern Orthodox Studies (Ukrainian
Orthodox Church - Kyiv Patriarchate), with Bishop Makarios conducting,
will sing an a capella concert marking the 15th anniversary of the death
of Metropolitan Hryhorij and featuring 20th century Slavic composers. The
Panakhyda Requiem by Pavel Chesnokov, the Liturgy of the Catechumen by
Yuri Slastion and the Liturgy of the Faithful by Yaroslav Yatsynevych will
be sung in Ukrainian at 7 p.m. at Moore's Opera House at the University
of Houston (take I-45 to Cullen exit, U. of H. entrance No. 16). The concert

- TORONTO: St. Vladimir Institute is offering a three-part workshop on
"Gerdany - Beadwork Ukrainian Style." In this series Maria Rypan
provides instruction on basic beadwork techniques for making fashionable
necklaces, chokers and bracelets. Classes will be held at the institute,

a whirlwind afternoon of dance and song in "A Ukrainian Montage,"

- NEW YORK: The Ukrainian Museum is currently showing the exhibition
"The Cultural Legacy of Vasyl Hryhorovych Krychevsky." The exhibit,
on view through March 12, features paintings and drawings of one of Ukraine's
outstanding public figures of the 20th century, an architect, artist, scholar
and educator, and offers visitors the unique opportunity to become acquainted
with one aspect of Krychevsky's creative heritage. A bilingual, illustrated
exhibition catalogue is available at the gift shop for $5; add $1.75 for
