The UNA is looking for teacher-volunteers to teach conversational English in Ukraine

by Oksana Trytjak
UNA Special Projects Coordinator

PARSIPPANY, N.J. - New volunteers can join the ranks of over 400 persons who since 1992 have spent a month or more participating in the UNA's program to teach conversational English in Ukraine in over 84 cities throughout the country. Volunteers will have an opportunity to visit and teach in almost any region of Ukraine.

Students vary from high-school students to professionals in various fields; often the classes of approximately 20 students are a mix of both. The class size is limited, and schedules are flexible.

To date approximately 6,000 students have benefited from the skills that the UNA's volunteers have shared with them. The courses give the students opportunities to converse in English with a native English speaker, reinforce their language skills and open a window to both American and Ukrainian cultures. What better way to teach Ukrainians about Americans than by sharing with them something very natural for us - the American spirit of volunteerism.

Applicants who have the desire and the time to contribute a month to this worthy cause should have teaching experience. The UNA will try to assign a class, supply teaching materials and provide room and board, in a homestay atmosphere, for a volunteer's extended stay in Ukraine. Most placements occur between June and August.

For information about the English Teachers for Ukraine program, please call the Ukrainian National Association, (973) 292-9800, ext. 3039 or 3071. There is a non-refundable $25 application fee. Deadline for applications is March 20.
