- EDMONTON: The 34th annual Shevchenko Lecture, sponsored by the Ukrainian
Professional and Business Club of Edmonton; the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian
Studies, University of Alberta; and the Ukrainian Resource and Development
Center, Grant MacEwan Community College; will focus on the topic "Ukrainians
in the Western Media: A Maligned Minority?" Speakers are Chrystia
Freeland, deputy editor, The Globe and Mail; and Roma Hadzewycz, editor-in-chief,
The Ukrainian Weekly. The lecture is at 7 p.m. at the Grant MacEwan's City

- NEW YORK: The Ukrainian Institute of America presents an exhibit of
the recent paintings and works on paper by Lviv artists Serhij Haj and
Ivan Tverdun. An opening reception will be held Tuesday, March 7, at the
institute, 2 E. 79th St., at 6-9 p.m. Gallery hours: noon-6 p.m. daily

- SAVANNAH, Ga.: Pianist Vitaliy Samoshko, laureate of the 1999 Queen
Elisabeth International Music Competition of Belgium, will appear with
the Savannah Symphony Orchestra, Chelsea Tipton II conducting, where he
will play Rachmaninoff's Third Piano Concerto. Also featured in the concert
program will be guitarist Denis Azabagic. The inaugural concert, part of
the Jepson Associates Concert Series, which showcases young international
artists who have won the world's most prestigious competitions, will be
held at the newly restored Lucas Theater for the Arts. The concert begins
at 8 p.m., with a gala reception to follow at the Hyatt Regency Savannah

- TORONTO: As part of the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies Seminar
in Ukrainian Studies at the University of Toronto, Yuri Shevchuk, New School
for Social Research, New York, will speak on the topic "Language and
the Creation of New Identities in Ukraine Since Independence." The
talk will be held at University College, Room 152, at 4 p.m.
- WOONSOCKET, R.I.: The Lenten Kitchen, sponsored annually by the Ladies
Sodality of St. Michael's Ukrainian Orthodox Church, with Anna Chaharyn
and Stephanie Samborsky, co-chairpersons, begins Friday, March 10. The
kitchen, held in the parish hall at 74 Harris Ave., will be open every
Friday at 3-6 p.m. through April 21. Meatless dishes and desserts will
be available. The parish hall will be set up for customers who would like
to eat in. Take-out service is also available.

- NEW YORK: The Shevchenko Scientific Society, the Ukrainian Academy
of Arts and Sciences, the Harriman Institute at Columbia University and
the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute invite the public to the 20th
annual Shevchenko Scholarly Conference. Papers will be read by Assya Humesky,
"Color Schemes in Shevchenko's Poetry"; Marta Tarnawsky, "English
Language Shevchenko Studies, 1980-1999"; and Andriy Danylenko "Some
Aspects of the Dialect Basis of Shevchenko's Language." The conference
will be held at the Shevchenko Scientific Society, 63 Fourth Ave. (between

- NEW YORK: The New York City branch of the Plast Ukrainian Youth Organization
invites the public to its 48th annual "novatska kostiumivka"
featuring "The Circus!" The children's costume play will begin
at 2:30 p.m. in the gymnasium of St. George's Ukrainian Catholic School,
located at the corner of Taras Shevchenko Place and sixth Street in Manhattan.
- WHIPPANY, N.J.: The Ukrainian American community in Morris County,
under the initiative of local UPA veterans and sponsored by the Ukrainian
Congress Committee of America, Morris County Branch, will honor the 50th
anniversary of the death of Roman Shukhevych - Taras Chuprynka, commander-in-chief
of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). The event will begin with a panakhyda
after the 11 a.m. liturgy celebrated at the St. John the Baptist Ukrainian
Catholic Church, Route 10, by the Rev. Urij Markewych. Representatives
of the UPA veterans of Newark, as well as local UPA veterans, veterans
of the 1st Division, and the youth organizations SUM and Plast will take
part. After the church service the program will continue in the church
hall. The main speech will be presented in Ukrainian (with a summary in
English) by Rutgers University Prof. Wolodymyr Stojko. The artistic portion
of the program will feature baritone Oleh Chmyr, accompanied by pianist
Volodymyr Vynnytsky; as well as singer/bandurist Oksana Telepko and children
from SUM and Plast. There will also be a preview from the upcoming film
directed by Oles Yanchuk, titled "Commander of the Army of Eternals."

- CAMBRIDGE, Mass.: The Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute seminar
series presents "Making Ukrainians Speak Ukrainian: Sociolinguistic
and Political Trends," with Dominique Arel, assistant professor of
research and acting director, Program on Politics, Culture and Identity,
Watson Institute for International Studies, Brown University. The lecture
will be held in the HURI Seminar Room, 1583 Massachusetts Ave., at 4-6
p.m. and will be followed by an open discussion. For further information

- EDMONTON: The Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies at the University
of Alberta is holding a lecture by Ivan Svarnyk, Central State Historical
Archive of Ukraine, Lviv, who will speak on "The Development of Heraldry
in Ukraine" (in Ukrainian). The lecture will be held in the Heritage
Lounge, Athabasca Hall, at 7:30 p.m.

- SLOATSBURG, N.Y.: The annual Lenten retreat for Catholics in Connecticut,
New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and surrounding areas, sponsored by
the League of Ukrainian Catholics (LUC), will be held at St. Mary's Villa
Retreat Center of the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate. The weekend
of prayer, reflection and fellowship will be a time to explore, ponder
and celebrate the "year of jubilee" in personal and communal
ways. The retreat master for the weekend will be the Rev. Jim Carroll,
a member of the Byzantine Franciscan Community in Sybertsville, Pa. A fee
of $95 will cover the cost of room from Friday through Sunday, and meals
on Saturday and Sunday. For early arrivals, a light meal will be available
