Latest volume of Hrushevsky introduced to scholarly community
EDMONTON - The English translation of the seventh volume of Mykhailo Hrushevsky's History of Ukraine-Rus' appeared in print in November 1999. The new volume was introduced to the scholarly community at the national convention of the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies in St. Louis. The book launch was held on November 19, 1999, and the volume was presented to the members of the association by Dr. Frank E. Sysyn, editor-in-chief of the Hrushevsky Translation Project and director of the Peter Jacyk Center for Ukrainian Historical Research; Dr. Serhii Plokhy, consulting editor of the volume; and Prof. Maxim Tarnawsky, director of the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies Press.
Volume 7, titled "The Cossack Age to 1625," is the second volume of Hrushevsky's History issued by the Jacyk Center and published by CIUS Press. Volume 1 appeared in print in 1997 and has received positive responses from readers and reviewers. The newly published volume is the first in the history's subseries on the Ukrainian Kozaks (Volumes 7 through 10). It covers the period from the late 15th century to the year 1625 and discusses the origins of the Kozaks, their rebellions against Polish rule under the leadership of Kryshtof Kosynsky and Severyn Nalyvaiko, and their role in the Khotyn War (1621) under the command of Petro Konashevych-Sahaidachny. In this volume, Hrushevsky also analyzes conflicts with the Crimean Tatars and the Ottoman Turks, as well as the role of the Kozaks in the Ukrainian cultural and religious revival of the 1620s.
The volume was translated into English by the late Dr. Bohdan Struminski; it was co-edited by Drs. Sysyn and Plokhy with the assistance of Uliana M. Pasicznyk. A grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (Washington) funded the translation of the volume, and the Canadian Foundation for Ukrainian Studies provided financial support to cover printing costs. Preparation of the volume for publication was supported by a generous donation from Olga Pawluk in memory of her husband, Stephen Pawluk.
