- NEW YORK: The Shevchenko Scientific Society is sponsoring two lectures
to be delivered by Prof. Volodymyr Panchenko and Prof. Leonid Kucenko of
the Vynnychenko Pedagogical University in Kirovohrad. Prof. Panchenko,
chair, department of comparative literature, will speak on the topic "The
Ukrainian Cultural Scene in Kirovohrad"; Leonid Kucenko, assistant
professor, department of Ukrainian literature, will speak about "Yevhen
Malaniuk: The Scope of His Creativity." The presentations will be
held at the society's building, 63 Fourth Ave., at 2 p.m.
- NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J.: The New Jersey Youth Symphony, under the direction
of Adrian Bryttan, will perform Act I from Wagner's "Die Walküre"

- WINNIPEG, Man.: The Ukrainian Academy of Arts and Sciences in Canada
is celebrating its golden jubilee with a conference and banquet at The
Lombard. The conference, "Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow - The Ukrainian
Community in Canada" is chaired by Prof. Jaroslav Rozumnyj with speakers
Dr. Roman Petryshyn and Dr. Oleh Wolowyna. Taking part in the round table
of scholars and community leaders concerning the development and articulation
of a vision for the future of the Ukrainian community in Canada will be:
Nadia Kostyshyn-Bailey, moderator; Adrian Boyko, Dr. Jurij Darewych, Andrew
Hladyshevsky, and Andrij Kudla Wynnyckyj, discussants. Guest speaker at
the dinner will be Prof. Peter Potichnyj. The conference will be held 1:30-5
p.m., followed by cocktails at 6:15 p.m. and the jubilee banquet at 7 p.m.

- WASHINGTON: The Washington Group (TWG) is holding its annual meeting
for current and prospective new members at the Van Ness Social Room, 2939
Van Ness St., at 7 p.m. The meeting will include annual reports, elections
to the board of directors, a brief presentation by Bohdan Budzan of the
International Management Institute in Kyiv, and a video of the film "Reflections
of the Past", where film-maker Slavko Nowytski will give some insights
about his documentary of the first Ukrainian immigration to Canada. Snacks

- HOLLYWOOD, Calif.: "Night Songs From a Neighboring Village",
traditional and new Jewish and Ukrainian music, featuring the renowned
klezmer ensemble Brave New World and the Canadian-Ukrainian group Paris
to Kyiv - led by singer and producer Alexis Kochan and her musical collaborator,
bandurist Julian Kytasty - will appear in concert in their West Coast premiere
at the John Anson Ford Amphitheater, 2580 Cahuenga Blvd., at 8 p.m. The
concert, which in bringing together the Eastern European Jewish and Ukrainian
musical traditions explores the interfaces where traditional music meets
the modern world, is part of the "YK2! The New Face of Yiddish Culture
- A Festival for the Next 1,000 Years" taking place throughout Southern
California May 14-21.
- LAS VEGAS: The Ukrainian American Club of Las Vegas will hold a Memorial
Day Party, with a pot luck dinner to be held at 7030 West Darby, starting
at 5:30 p.m. The club will furnish appetizers and desserts. Please check

- Parma, Ohio: St. Vladimir's Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral and St. Josaphat's
Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral are hosting "United Christ," to
celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. There will be vespers will be at 5
p.m. on Saturday, May 20 at St. Vladimir's with Metropolitan Constantine
and Bishop Robert. A banquet and concert will be held at noon, Sunday,
May 21 at St. Josaphat's Astrodome Hall. Two Ukrainian choirs, one adult
and one youth, will sing liturgical music. Sunday event tickets are $35,

- NEW YORK: The Ukrainian Institute of American (UIA) invites the Ukrainian
community to a concert benefiting the UIA "Crown Jewel Endowment"
and the "Daria Hoydysh Endowment for the Arts". The concert will
take place at the institute, 2 E. 79 St., at 3 p.m. and will feature Oksana
Krovytska, soprano, New York City Opera, accompanied by Vyacheslav Bakis,
pianist. Ms. Krovytska will perform songs and arias by Liudkevych, Barvinsky,
Liszt, Dvorak, Janacek, Giordano, Cilea and Puccini. Contribution: $125

- NEW YORK: The Ukrainian Art and Literary Club and the New York Bandura
Ensemble invite the public for the fourth event of the "Bandura Downtown"
series, a "Meet the Composer" concert featuring the compositions
and arrangement of Michael Andrec. Mr. Andrec will be joined by Alla Kutsevych
and the Experimental Bandura Trio (J. Kytasty, J. Fedynsky, M. Andrec)
in works ranging from arrangements of Renaissance brass music to world
premieres of works in progress. Donation: $7. The evening will be held

- TORONTO: St. Vladimir Institute, 620 Spadina Ave., presents Lubomyra
Tomchuk, renowned designer and embroiderer, who will share the secrets
of her inspirational Ukrainian stitches and designs. Ms. Tomchuk will display
many of her original embroidered shirts, or "sorochky," including
Borschiv-style, white-on-white and beaded. This is a good introduction
to a series of workshops on embroidery to be held at the institute this
