BALTIMORE - The board of directors of the national office of the Ukrainian Medical Association of North America (UMANA) met in executive session Saturday, May 13 at the Homer Kodelsky Pavilion at the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore. Dr. Roman Goy, president, welcomed the committee members from across the United States as guests to his city of residence to discuss scheduled business and plan the future activity of the association.
The following representatives were present: Adrian Baranetsky (New York Metro), UMANA News editor; Daria Massimilla-Chapelsky, president of the Washington Metro Chapter; Paul Dzul (Detroit), president of the World Federation of Ukrainian Medical Associations and editor-in-chief of the Journal of the Ukrainian Medical Association of North America; Maria Hrycelak (Chicago), immediate past president; Bohdan Iwanetz (Chicago), vice-president; Larissa Iwanetz (Chicago), membership administrator; Andrew Iwach (California North), treasurer; George Kryzaniwsky (New York Metro), secretary; Ihor Voyevidka (California North), president-elect; Ihor Zachary (Ohio), branch representative; and George Hrycelak (Chicago), UMANA Foundation president.
The UMANA, the premier organization of Ukrainian medical professionals in North America, has been in existence for 50 years. Incorporated in New York City, the headquarters were moved to Chicago in 1975. The current board of directors and executive committee consist of members from many different states. The board and executive officers meet quarterly in locations throughout North America, varying the cities to cover the geographic area represented by the association's 18 chapters.
At the May 13 meeting 12 officers and directors conferred for seven hours, covering a wide variety of routine topics, as well as discussing in depth plans for celebrating the upcoming 50th anniversary of the UMANA.
Upon completion of the meeting, Dr. Goy surprised the officers by arranging a joint visit with a tour organized by The Washington Group of the exhibit "Gold of the Nomads" being held at Baltimore's Walters Art Gallery on Charles Street. This collection of ancient Scythian artifacts enchanted the visitors, serving as a fascinating conclusion to a productive and informative gathering of UMANA officers.
