Self Reliance hosts events for seniors

by Irena D'Alessio

NEW YORK - On any given Thursday afternoon, about 40 senior citizens gather at the Self Reliance Association of American Ukrainians at 98 Second Ave. in New York for several hours of fun and laughter. For the last three years, the social service staff and volunteers of the Self Reliance Association have played host to its community residents, providing them with the opportunity to socialize with other Ukrainians in their community and to share their common cultural heritage.

In a relaxed atmosphere, members enjoy playing bingo, are treated to holiday socials, or participate in informative seminars. Under the skillful direction of Oleh Lopatynsky and association volunteers, Bingo is in full swing on most Thursdays, offering the promise of delicious chocolate prizes. In addition, Anna Geletey prepares cultural programs for the members.

The program also hosts guest lecturers on issues of interest to senior citizens. Last December, Virlana Tkacz, founder and artistic director of the Yara Arts Group, presented a slide show on Yara's trip to Siberia, where Yara artists collected folk songs and legends of the Buryat region.

In January the members celebrated the New Year with a luncheon and were entertained by the melodious voices and bandura strains of Alla Kutsevych and Liuda Hrabovska. The guest of honor at the luncheon was Council Member Margarita Lopez, of District 3, Manhattan, who is an avid supporter of the Ukrainian community.

Other activities included a concert at the Ukrainian Institute, a trip to Stamford, Conn., and a ride around Manhattan on the Circle Line. A trip to the Amish country is planned for June. These trips are of great value as they promote friendship and enable the members to travel to places that would otherwise be inaccessible to them.

The Self Reliance Association (New York Branch), is the only center in New York City that offers recreational and social service opportunities for Ukrainian senior citizens. The program is partially funded by the New York City Department for the Aging. Information and referrals on social services are provided to clients on a daily basis, whether they reside at home, or are in hospitals or nursing homes, by Oksana Lopatynsky and Irene D'Alessio.

Volunteers to provide visits to the homebound and nursing home residents are urgently needed. Interested applicants may call Ms. Lopatynsky or Ms. D'Alessio at (212) 777-1336 or fax (212) 777-2063.
