CHESS
The Olympic chess tournament, which doubled as the championship of the Ukrainian Sports Federation of the U.S.A. and Canada (USCAK) for the year 2000, took place on July 1 at the Tryzub Ukrainian American Sports Center.
Twelve players representing six Ukrainian American clubs competed in a five-round Swiss-system tournament. The competition resulted in a tie for first through third places by three chess masters, Borys Baczynskyj (Tryzub-Philadelphia), Steven Stoyko and Peter Radomskyj (both of Choromorska Sitch-Newark, N. J.) - all of whom had scores of 4:1.
Mr. Radomskyj had the highest tiebreakers among the three and was awarded the Olympic gold medal as well as the USCAK championship title for the year 2000. This was Mr. Radomskyj's second USCAK title in a row and his fifth overall.
Messrs. Baczynskyj and Stoyko, who had identical tiebreakers, were both awarded silver medals.
Fourth and fifth-places were shared by Dr. Ihor Podebryi and the Rev. Marian Procyk (both of the Popel Club-Buffalo, N.Y.), who scored 3:2. Dr. Podebryi garnered the bronze medal based on tiebreakers.

TENNIS
The Ukrainian Diaspora Olympiad's tennis tournament was conducted in three categories: men's, women's and senior men's. A total of 40 players registered to play, but only 33 competed. Forty-seven individual matches were played during the entire competition.
In each category a full feed-in competition was held with the winner of the feed-in receiving a bronze medal for third place. The main draw finalists received gold and silver medals.
The quality of play was excellent, since many of the best Ukrainian players from the United States competed in this tournament and came from as far as Chicago, Detroit and points south.
Iryna Matijchuk was phenomenal. The 12-year-old guest from Uzhorod, Ukraine, won the gold medal in the women's division.
Also welcomed on Tryzubivka's tennis courts was Ukraine's Vice Prime Minister for Humanitarian Affairs Mykola Zhulynsky, who demonstrated that he can play tennis very well, playing doubles with Mr. Sawchak against recent arrivals from Ukraine, brothers Albert and Yurij Kolb.
In the men's division the gold medal winner was Dennis Chorny, this year's USCAK champion, who in the finals of the main draw defeated Dr. George Charuk, Levy (Lions)-Chicago and USCAK's champion in several categories, by the score of 6-3, 6-3.
In the semifinals Mr. Chorny defeated Adrian Kutko, Potomac, Md., 6-1, 6-3; while Dr. Charuk beat Gene Olynec, Tryzub-Philadelphia, 6-3, 6-3.
The competition for the bronze medal was won by Mr. Kutko over Don Kopach, Levy, 6-3, 6-4. Mr. Kopach eliminated Mr. Olynec in the semifinals of the feed-in, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.
In the women's division Ms. Matijchuk dominated the field. She beat Michele Wroblewski-Baur, Chernyk-Detroit, 6-2, 6-2; Angie Kutko, Potomac, Md., 6-1, 6-0; and won the final by default when her opponent failed to show for the match. In the play for silver and bronze medals, Ms. Kutko defeated Marijka Rumsavych, Levy, 6-7, 7-6, 7-6, thus winning the bronze medal.
The senior men's final was a battle between two perennial champions. Lew Worobkewych, Chernyk, and Mr. Sawchak, Tryzub. Both Messrs. Worobkevych and Sawchak were USCAK champions for a number of years. Mr. Sawchak won the three-hour marathon 6-7, 7-6, 6-3, thus receiving the gold medal. In the semifinals Mr. Sawchak defeated Jerry Tymkiw, Tryzub, Philadelphia, 6-4, 7-5, and Mr. Worobkevych beat Ihor Buhai, Tryzub, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1. In the competition for the bronze medal Mr. Tymkiw won over Mr. Buhaj, 6-1, 6-2.
Also competing in this group was the 82-year-old super-senior Alexander Mychaluk, Tryzub, who in the first round defeated Matthew Wroblewski, Chernyk, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, before succumbing to Mr. Buhai and Alex Olynec in subsequent rounds.
