Cheladyn displays "Flowers of the Bible"

by Michael Ewanchuk

WINNIPEG - Larisa Sembaliuk Cheladyn's watercolors came to Winnipeg on July 2-27, to the Assiniboine Park Conservatory, not far from the wonderful Leo Mol sculpture gardens.

A talented Canadian-born Ukrainian artist, Ms. Cheladyn's exposition, titled "Flowers of the Bible," reflects the decorative elements she saw in Ukrainian churches as a little girl when she attended services with her mother. Among the exhibit was a fine framed painting of water lilies; according to the artist, water lilies still are incorporated into Hutsul church architecture and design. The lily design also appeared on the pillars of Solomon's Temple.

The artist is totally bilingual (English and Ukrainian), and her exhibit also has comments in French.

During a brief interview, Ms. Cheladyn stated: "My love of the environment impelled me to art. I was inspired by my Ukrainian background, and my desire to experiment led to success. My husband Michael is very supportive and cooperates with me." Hopefully, her daughters, Tetiana and Illiana, also have an artistic bent.

The artist has toured Europe and South America, and has visited Venezuela twice.

The "Flowers of the Bible" exhibit will travel to Ontario in September. Next year the artist will exhibit in several cities in the United States.
