Evening of contemporary literature from Ukraine planned in Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA - An evening of contemporary Ukrainian literature - "Literaturnyi Mist: Ukraina-Amerika," featuring two of Ukraine's major contemporary writers - Yurii Vynnychuk and Yurii Andrukhovych, will be held on Sunday, November 19, in the gallery of the Ukrainian Educational and Cultural Center, 700 Cedar Road, Jenkintown, Pa., at 4:30 p.m. The bilingual program (Ukrainian and English) is sponsored by the Ukrainian Federation of America and the Philadelphia Branch of the Shevchenko Scientific Society.
Mr. Vynnychuk, a veteran of the 1970s Lviv cultural underground, is best known for his numerous prose writings, his commentaries in the Lviv-based newspaper Postup (Progress) and his work in the cabaret ensemble Ne Zhurys! One of his most recent publications, "Lehendy Lvova" (1999), is a collection of legends and anecdotes indigenous to that city.
Mr. Andrukhovych is arguably the most talked-about writer in Ukraine today. Initially gaining notoriety through his poetry and his activities as part of the Bu-Ba-Bu literary collective, Mr. Andrukhovych is also the author of three novels, "Rekreatsii," "Moskoviada" and "Perverzia," which have placed the writer at the center of discussions of contemporary Ukrainian literature. His latest book is a collection of essays titled "Dezoriientatsiia Na Mistsevosti" (1999).
Both writers will be reading from their works. Also participating in the evening will be Prof. Michael Naydan of Penn State University, who has recently translated the works of both authors into English, and actor Michael Bernoski, who will be acting out scenes from the recent English-language translations of Mr. Vynnychuk's and Mr. Andrukhovych's prose works. Admission is $10. Books will be available for purchase (and autographing). Wine and other refreshments will be served. For more information, call Vera Andryczyk, (610) 539-8946.
