AN APPEAL FOR INVOLVEMENT
"Litopys UPA" needs your support
Dear members of the Ukrainian community:
We address you on an issue that concerns the entire Ukrainian community. We are referring to the publication of "Litopys UPA" (Chronicle of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army), its goals and relevance to us all, as well as its accomplishments to date and its future. We believe that this issue affects us all.
"Litopys UPA," initiated 27 years ago, has been guided by former soldiers of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army and focuses on discovering, compiling and publishing documents and materials related to the history of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army as well as the Ukrainian nation's struggle for independence during and after World War II.
As a result of the efforts of former UPA members and with the assistance of financial sponsors, 32 volumes of "Litopys UPA" were released in the original series, three volumes in the Kyiv series with the cooperation of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the main archives of Ukraine's Cabinet of Ministers and the Security Service of Ukraine, and two volumes in the latest third series titled "Litopys UPA - The Library."
In total, 37 books have been published, with 3 additional volumes scheduled for publication in 2001. The search for materials continues in the hope that in a few years our readers will have 50 volumes of this valuable publication.
The books published by "Litopys UPA" have sparked great interest and have received favorable reviews in academic circles, particularly in university libraries throughout the world. On the Internet, "Litopys UPA" has not only found enthusiastic readers, but has generated an interest in our liberation struggles among broad academic circles in various countries. It has also helped to negate and correct the contrary opinions of various individuals who claim that our fight for independence was orchestrated by Nazi collaborators and war criminals.
With the purpose of depicting the actual facts about our liberation struggle, the "Collection of Materials About the Insurgent and Anti-Insurgent Struggle in Ukraine" has been established at the University of Toronto. The collection contains over 300,000 pages of documents. This extensive archive is being maintained by the university.
However, despite undisputable accomplishments and years of selfless hard work, our financial resources are dwindling. As a result, we have resolved to appeal for financial support and assistance from the entire Ukrainian community. We invite everyone to read and subscribe to "Litopys UPA." We invite interested individuals to become associates, donors and patrons of upcoming "Litopys UPA" volumes. Each volume in the first and second series cost approximately $25,000 to publish. In the third series, "Litopys UPA - The Library," the cost of one volume is $10,000. The names and pictures of donors and their families will be permanently documented in our publications as a grateful tribute and reminder for future generations.
We ask everyone to join this effort and to promote the publication among friends and acquaintances in the belief that the project is good and necessary not only for our history but for strengthening our national awareness, as well as our statehood.
Petro Mycak, chairman
"Litopys UPA" Fund-Raising Committee
