- HARTFORD, Conn.: A traditional Ukrainian New Year's Eve dance, "Malanka,"
will be held at the Ukrainian National Home, 961 Wethersfield Ave., at
9 p.m.-2 a.m., featuring the Svitanok orchestra. For tickets and table

Friday, January 19
- NEW YORK: The Ukrainian Art and Literary Club and the New York Ukrainian
Bandura Ensemble (NYBE) present "The Feast of Yordan: Blessing of
the Waters" as part of the "Archetypes of Ukrainian Culture"
series. The program will feature ritual songs (schedrivky), beliefs and
divinations associated with Ukrainian pre-Christian and Christian mid-winter
water celebrations. The performance will include members of the NYBE under
the direction of Alla Kutzevych, with commentary by Jaroslawa Gerulak.
Donation: $7. The evening will be held at the Mayana Gallery, 136 Second

- NEW YORK: The Shevchenko Scientific Society will host a performance
by the Les Kurbas Theater from Lviv titled "At the Origins of Ritual."

- TORONTO: The Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies Seminar at the
University of Toronto is holding a lecture by Dr. Frank Sysyn, University
of Alberta, titled "Anatomy of a Revolt: Hrushevsky's Analysis of
the Causes of the Khmelnytsky Uprising." The lecture will be held
at University College, 15 King's College Circle, Room 256, at 4 p.m. For

- NEW YORK: Yara Arts Group, the New York School of Bandura and the Ukrainian
Institute of America present: "Malanka: Contemporary Artists, Writers
and Performers React to the Pagans." As part of the Malanka festival
held Friday-Sunday, January 26-28, there will be an opening of an art exhibit,
at 8 p.m., which includes works by Rosie Cutler, Jason Eksuzian, Anya Farion,
Mark Ferguson, Annette Friedman, Petro Hrytsyk, Alexandra Isaevych, Cynthia
Karalla, Yuri Lev, Maria Lupo, Olga Maryschuk, Margaret Morton, Kateryna
Nemyra, Algis Norvila, Andrea Odezynska, Carmen Pujols, Joel Schlemowitz,
Ilona Sochynsky, Youlia Tkatchouk, Mariana Trofimova, Marybeth Ward and

- NEW YORK: Yara Arts Group, the New York School of Bandura and the Ukrainian
Institute of America present: "Malanka: Contemporary Artists, Writers
and Performers React to the Pagans." Art exhibit continues. On Saturday,
January 27, at 8 p.m. there will be a concert of traditional winter songs
(koliadky, shedrivky, malanky and kozy) performed by Maryana Sadovska,
Alexis Kochan, Julian Kytasty, Yaryna Turianska, Eugene Hutz, as well as
performances by Yara of prose and poetry. Followed by Yara's 10th Anniversary
Party, to be held Sunday at 4 p.m. Music will be by Yaryna Turianska, Odarka
Polanska, David DiPietri and the Experimental Bandura Trio. Tickets: $20,
Saturday; $15, Sunday; $35, for the entire festival. Information is available

REMINDER REGARDING REQUIREMENTS:
There is a $10 charge per submission for listings in Preview of Events.
The listing plus payment must be received no later than one week before
the desired date of publication. There is also the option of prepayment
for a series of listings.
Listings of no more than 100 words (written in Preview format) plus payment
