PREVIEW OF EVENTS
Friday, March 16
- NEW YORK: The Ukrainian Art and Literary Club presents "Reclaiming
Our Bylyny," a musical evening featuring unique recordings of Ukrainian
medieval epos of the Kyivan Rus' period from the collection of Levko Maystrenko.
The music, set to text restored to Ukrainian, was composed and performed
by renowned bandurist Zynoviy Shtokalko (1920-1968), whose lifetime ambition
was to reconstruct the ancient Ukrainian musical genre. As precursors of
the epic kozak "dumy," the bylyny (tales of old) told of the
feats of semi-fantastic beings and of Kyivan heroes (bohatyrs). Donation:
$7. The evening will be held at the Mayana Gallery, 136 Second Ave., fourth
floor, at 7 p.m. For more information call (212) 260-4490 or (212) 777-8144.
