UNA and UFA revisit issue of merger
SCRANTON, Pa. - Executive officers of the Ukrainian National Association and the Ukrainian Fraternal Association met here at the Radisson Lackawanna on January 11 to discuss their possible merger at the two organizations' upcoming conventions later this year.
The meeting's goal was to lay the groundwork for discussions on the possibilities and conditions for a merger of the two fraternal benefit societies.
Present at the meeting on behalf of the Ukrainian National Association were President Ulana Diachuk, National Secretary Martha Lysko and Treasurer Stefan Kaczaraj. The Ukrainian Fraternal Association was represented by a delegation composed of President John Oleksyn, Supreme Secretary Christina Shablovsky, Financial Secretary-Treasurer Audrey Thomas, Supreme Council Member Jaroslaw Gawur and Mykola Dupliak, the editor of the UFA's weekly newspaper, Narodna Volya.
The UNA and UFA leaders reviewed the conditions of the merger previously proposed in 1998 in order to ascertain which conditions, given the current situation, are still relevant.
The UNA's next convention is slated for May, while the UFA's is to be held in June. Since time is of the essence, the executive officers of both fraternal organizations agreed to convene at a second meeting in the very near future.
