Elizabeth teacher cited for excellence

PHILADELPHIA - Lilia Chaika, a teacher at Elizabeth High School in Elizabeth, N.J., has been nominated the teacher of the year. She is a valued member of the math department, having taught the entire spectrum of math courses over many years.

Ms. Chaika makes the phrase "mathematics for all" come alive in her classroom, makes learning an enjoyable experience and does everything possible to ensure that her students learn meaningful and important skills.

"Who's Who Among American Teachers" listed Ms. Chaika in 1991 and 2002. She has supervised student teachers for colleges and after a rigorous and qualifying session was selected to assess candidate performances from throughout the country for the prestigious and innovative National Board Certification offered by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

Besides her teaching schedule Ms. Chaika has co-edited the EHS yearbook for four years, during which time the yearbook has won the Partnership in Excellence award and the second place award of the American Scholastic Press Association.

Ms. Chaika also teaches math at Kean University and has been recognized as a model professor. She is currently affiliated with Manor College in Jenkintown, Pa. Ms. Chaika is also a member of the board of directors of the historic Old Bohemia, St. Francis Xavier Jesuit Mission in Warwick, Md., shrine of colonial Catholicism established in 1704.

Ms. Chaika is a member of Branch 234 of the Ukrainian National Association.
