THE ELEVENTH ANNIVERSARY OF UKRAINE'S INDEPENDENCE

Scranton, Pa.

SCRANTON, Pa. - On Friday, August 23, Mayor Chris Doherty of Scranton, invited members of the Ukrainian community to Scranton's Municipal Building to publicly celebrate the 11th anniversary of Ukraine's independence. Mayor Doherty proclaimed August 24, as "Ukrainian Independence Day" in Scranton and called upon all citizens of the city to join the many Americans of Ukrainian descent to acknowledge the independence of Ukraine with the hope that its freedom and self-determination will never again be taken away. Coordinated by the Ukrainian Heritage Council of Northeastern Pennsylvania, the ceremonies ended outdoors in front of the Municipal Building with the raising of the Ukrainian flag and the singing of the Ukrainian national anthem.
