Children attend Chemney Camp at Soyuzivka

KERHONKSON, N.Y. - Two weeks in July at Soyuzivka were filled with the voices and laughter of boys and girls age 4-8 who participated in the resort's Chemney Day Camp 2002.

Under the direction of Marianka Wasylyk, the children were exposed to their rich Ukrainian heritage through song, dance, crafts, stories and play.

A total of 60 children attended two one-week camp sessions based on the favorite Ukrainian story of "The Mitten" (Rukavychka).

The campers were split into five groups, each named for one of "The Mitten's" forest animal inhabitants (Vedmedyky, Lysychky, Zaichyky, Zhabky and Myshky).

Both Ukrainian and English were spoken by counselors to conduct storytelling/singing (Ms. Wasylyk), arts/crafts (Lesia Kuch and Natalka Junas), Ukrainian dance (Andrew Oprysko), Ukrainian lessons (Bohdanna Puzyk) and sports (Olya Muzyka).

Special events included pysanky games, a pajama party, a movie, a bonfire with marshmallows, Winter Olympics, an ice cream party and a trip to nearby Kelder Farm.

Camp ended on Friday evening during Soyuzivka's Odesa night, at which the campers presented the Chemney Camp version of "The Mitten," complete with songs and dances learned during the week.
