Two years ago The Ukrainian Weekly reported the final results of Ukraine's participation in the Summmer Olympic Games that took place in Sydney from September 15 through October 1. It was the first Ukrainian squad whose talents had been nurtured since national independence in 1991. The 39 athletes who competed in 26 sports brought home three gold medals, 10 silver and 10 bronze.
Undoubtedly, the star of the Games for Ukraine was Yana Klochkova, 18, who won Ukraine's first gold medal, smashing the world and Olympic records in the 400-meter individual medley. She captured another gold in the 200-meter IM and a silver in the 800-meter freestyle. Mykola Milchev earned perfect scores in all five rounds of the skeet shooting competition. And, boxers Andrii Kotelnyk, Serhii Dotsenko, Volodymyr Sydorenko, Serhii Danylchenko and Andrii Fedchuk had a surprise haul of two silver and three bronze medals, becoming the main contributors to Ukraine's overall medal count.
Other medals were won in swimming, cycling, gymnastics, judo, archery, trampoline, wrestling, sailing, diving, long jump and triple jump.
