70 experts confirmed as speakers for Washington conference on Ukraine

NEW YORK - As the conference date draws near, the steering committee of the third annual "Ukraine's Quest for Mature Nation Statehood" roundtable series announced that over 70 government leaders, international foreign policy experts, prominent figures from research centers and academia, as well as journalists have confirmed their participation. Experts from the United States, Ukraine, the European Union and NATO will gather on October 8-9 to evaluate Ukraine's prospects for eventual integration into the structures of the EuroAtlantic community.

The two-day conference, to be held at the JW Marriott on Pennsylvania Avenue in the heart of the nation's capital, will feature several keynote addresses, 12 panels and two working luncheons. Scheduled to deliver a keynote address is Ukraine's former prime minister and leader of the Our Ukraine bloc, Victor Yushchenko. Sen. Carl Levin, chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee, has agreed to deliver a keynote address on the importance of Ukraine to the EuroAtlantic Community.

Ukraine's Quest for Mature Nation Statehood - Roundtable III: "Ukraine and the EuroAtlantic Community" will take into account Ukraine's efforts to move matters from theory to practice, by exploring four major areas of discussion. The conference's topics will assess: the progress of Ukraine's transition to EuroAtlantic structures, state of European Union-Ukraine relations, the state of U.S.-Ukraine relations and the state of NATO-Ukraine relations.

Speaking on behalf of Ukraine, the following speakers have confirmed their attendance: Oleksander Chalii, state secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Hennadii Udovenko, chair, Verkhovna Rada Committee on Human Rights; National Deputy Serhii Osyka, chair, Ukraine-U.S. Inter-Parliamentary Commission; Mykola Tomenko, chair, Verkhovna Rada Information Committee; Borys Tarasyuk, Chair, Verkhovna Rada Committee on European Integration; Yuri Yekhanurov, Chair, Verkhovna Rada Committee on Industry and Enterpreneurship; Ihor Ostash, vice-president, Parliamentary Assembly of the OSCE; and Romna Shpek, special envoy to the EU.

Confirmed speakers from the United States include: Marcy Kaptur and Bob Schaffer; co-chairs, Congressional Ukrainian Caucus; Curt Weldon, member, Congressional Ukrainian Caucus; Sarah Lenti, Director, Europe and Eurasia, National Security Council; Ian Brzezinski, deputy assistant secretary of defense/Europe and NATO; Gen. Nicholas Krawciw, president, Dupuy Institute; Shaun Donnelly, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Economic and Business Affairs; William Taylor, Coordinator for U.S. Assistance to Europe and Eurasia; and Anders Aslund, Senior Associate, Carnegie Endowment.

Confirmed speakers from Europe include: James Sherr, senior fellow- CSCR/Royal Military Academy Sandhurst; Guenther Burghardt, head of delegation, European Commission; Andreas Gross, vice-president PACE, and, Carl Hartzell, senior advisor-Policy Unit, Secretariat General of the EU Council.
