- CAMBRIDGE, Mass.: The Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute is proud
to announce its first lecture of the new academic year will be given by
Michael S. Flier, Oleksandr Potebnja Professor of Ukrainian Philology at
Harvard University. His lecture, titled "The Smoking Tapes: What the
Melnychenko Recordings Reveal about Non-literary Surzhyk," will take
place at 4-6 p.m. in the Seminar Room of the institute, 1583 Massachusetts

- LOS ANGELES: The UCLA Film and Television Archives, jointly with the
Hollywood Trident Foundation, present "Earth - The Films of Alexander
Dovzhenko." As part of the film program, the screenings will be introduced
by scholars of Dovzhenko's works - Marco Carynnyk, writer and editor, Dovzhenko
scholar and translator; Prof. George Liber, department of history, University
of Alabama; and Prof. Bohdan Nebesio, Film Studies Program, University
of Alberta. A public seminar titled "Memoirs of Alexander Dovzhenko,
the Filmmaker," will be given by Mr. Carynnyk at 4 p.m. in Room 253,
Melnitz Hall. The films will be shown in the James Bridges theater on the
UCLA campus at 7:30 p.m. A reception to open the festival will take place
on Thursday, October 3, at 6:30 p.m., in the theater lobby. Screening schedule:

Kokhannia" (Love's Berry) (1926); with introduction by Mr. Carynnyk;
Saturday, October 5 - "Zvenyhora" (1928), "Arsenal"
(1929), with Prof. Liber; Tuesday, October 8 - "Ivan" (1932);
"Bytva za Nashu Radiansku Ukrainu" (The Battle for Our Soviet
Ukraine) (released in 1943), with commentary by Prof. Nebesio. The reception
will be open to all ticket holders and special guests invited by the hosts.

- NEW YORK: The Ukrainian Medical Association of North America (UMANA),
New York Metro Chapter, in cooperation with the Self Reliance Association
of American Ukrainians, New York Branch, will hold a community based medical
lecture at 2 p.m. at 98 Second Ave. The featured physician is Dr. Petro
Lenchur, who will discuss "Current Issues in Cardiology." Admission

- PHILADELPHIA: The Plast-Pryiat auxiliary organization of the Plast
Ukrainian Scouting Organization, will be holding a fund-raiser to benefit
Ukrainian youth. Please join us for "An Evening at Casino Royale,"
to be held at the Ukrainian Educational and Cultural Center, 700 Cedar
Road, Jenkintown, Pa. Admission: $40 per person; $35, with advance ticket
purchase. Admission price includes casino with game tables, cash prizes,
buffet dinner, beer, wine, DJ and dance. The casino will be open at 7-11

- PHOENIX, Ariz.: The Ukrainian National Women's League of America Branch
3 will hold an "Embroidery Day" at the Ukrainian American Cultural
Center, 730 W. Elm St. beginning at 12:30 p.m. The event will include an
extensive display of Ukrainian embroidery, a dinner prepared by branch
members, an embroidery clothing contest with prizes awarded to audience
participants and a Ukrainian costume fashion show. The day will end with
a grand lottery. Please dress in your finest embroidered clothing and come
and help us enjoy the festivities.

- EDMONTON: The Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies (CIUS) is holding
a book launch of the English translation of Volume 8 of Mykhailo Hrushevsky's
"History of Ukraine Rus'," featuring presentations by Dr. Nancy
S. Kollmann, professor of history and director of the Center for Russian
and East European Studies, Stanford University, and Dr. Frank E. Sysyn,
director of the Peter Jacyk Center for Ukrainian Historical Research and
editor-in-chief of the Hrushevsky Translation Project. A reception follows
the presentations and discussion period. The book launch will be held in
the Faculty Club, University of Alberta, at 5 p.m. Seating for the event

of works by Haydn, Handel, Brahms, Rachmaninoff, de Falla, Liszt, Sarasate,

Children/Student Sponsorship Program in Ukraine. Keynote speaker Maria

Branch, invites you and your family to their 50th anniversary celebration,
to be held at the Ukrainian National Home, 961 Wethersfield Ave., starting
at 6 p.m. The program includes a keynote address, cultural performances
by SUM youth, dinner and a dance to the tunes of Zorepad. Donation: adults,
