UCCLA leader reacts to election results
Following are excerpts from a June 29 comment on the results of Canada's federal election by the chairman of the Ukrainian Canadian Civil Liberties Association, John B. Gregorovich. The statement was issued a day after the election, in which Canadians elected a minority Liberal government.
The majority of MPs in the next Parliament represent parties who officially confirmed their support for redress to both the Ukrainian and Chinese Canadian communities for the injustices our groups experienced. ... Now we call upon all MPs from the Conservative Party of Canada, from the NDP and the Bloc Quebecois, along with those Liberals who endorsed our calls for recognition and restitution, asking them to work together to bring closure to our calls for justice. The Liberal Party of Canada just witnessed its majority being undone, in part because many voters rejected their record of broken promises and their arrogance.
Today we have heard the Liberals say they were humbled and have learned from this election about the importance of listening to their constituents. Therefore, we are calling upon all parties represented in the House of Commons to come together and finally negotiate a resolution and a reconciliation with our communities, as set forth in Inky Mark's private member's bills ... The time has come for a just settlement of these matters. ...
