Ukrainian Technological Society presents 33rd annual scholarship awards


PITTSBURGH - The Ukrainian Technogical Society hosted a scholarship awards social on Sunday, August 7, beginning at 3 p.m. in the auditorium of the Henry Clay Frick Fine Arts Building on the University of Pittsburgh campus to present its 33rd scholarship awards.

With these 2005 awards, the Pittsburgh-based society has made 317 awards to 229 different college-bound students of Ukrainian descent residing in the area of Western Pennsylvania and bordering regions of Ohio and West Virginia.

President Debra A. Walenchok welcomed the students, parents, members and guests. Continuing the program, Treasurer Nickolas C. Kotow thanked the Ukrainian community for its unwavering and very generous support of the UTS Scholarship Program. UTS member Roksana Korchynsky, Ph.D., spoke on the necessity of quality in a commitment to excellence, and Michael Kotyk, Ph.D., the first president of the society, spoke on how education throughout life emancipates a person for productive activity.

Then, the scholarship awards were made, and the students shared with the audience their future college and life plans. Ten scholarship awards were made, totalling $5,500. The society intends to make a further award of $500 to the scholarship program of Smoloskyp Inc., which benefits Ukrainian college students in Ukraine.

Michael Korchynsky and Mr. Kotow co-chaired the Scholarship Committee for 2005.

Vitaly Cherednichenko of Pittsburgh received the Korchynsky Family Scholarship; Domenique E. George of Wheeling, W.Va., received the Chester Manasterski Memorial Scholarship; and Nicholas J. Honchar of Carnegie, Pa., received the Ukrainian Selfreliance of Western Pennsylvania Federal Credit Union Scholarship.

Receiving Akim and Tatiana Kutsenkow Memorial Scholarships were Autumn M. Adamiak of Arnold, Pa., Allison Krisza of Pittsburgh, Anna Lernatovych of Carnegie and Nathan R. Polnyj of North Huntingdon, Pa.

The Rostyslaw and Kateryna Dowbenko Scholarship was received by Alexander Begey of Baden, Pa; Eric Senedak of Austintown, Ohio, and Molly Wolfe of Ford City, Pa., received Ukrainian Technological Society scholarships.

Several students were in Ukraine and several were working so they were not able to attend the scholarship social.

After the awards presentation, all enjoyed light refeshments in the atrium area and got to meet one another.
