EDITORIAL STAFF

  • Editor-in-Chief Roma Hadzewycz joined The Weekly staff full-time in February 1977. After serving as editorial assistant, assistant editor and editor, she was named editor-in-chief in May 1980. She holds a B.A. in journalism and psychology from New York University and an M.A. in journalism with a concentration in politics, also from NYU. She has edited the four books released by The Ukrainian Weekly: “The Great Famine in Ukraine: The Unknown Holocaust” (1983, second edition -1988; co-edited with George Zarycky and Marta Kolomayets), “The Ukrainian Weekly 2000” – Volume I, 1933-1969 (2000; co-edited with Irene Jarosewich) and Volume II, 1970-1999 (2001) and “Ukraine Lives!” (2002). Ms. Hadzewycz served as an advisor of the Ukrainian National Association for two and a half terms, 1990-1998, and 2000-2002.

    Since February 2007 Ms. Hadzewycz has been editor-in-chief also of Svoboda, the Ukrainian-language weekly newspaper published by the UNA.

  • Editor Matthew Dubas officially joined The Ukrainian Weekly staff on June 20, 2006. A graduate of Montclair State University in New Jersey, Mr. Dubas holds a bachelor’s degree cum laude in history; he minored in Russian area studies. He is a member of the Ukrainian American Youth Association (SUM) and is a talented musician who plays a mean accordion. Mr. Dubas performs with the Svitanok band, which is based in New York and New Jersey, and also as a solo artist.
  • Editor Zenon Zawada of the Kyiv Press Bureau joined The Weekly’s staff in February 2005, serving until January 2008 and returning in August 2008. He earned a B.A. in international studies from American University in Washington in May 1998 with a minor in communication. Prior to joining The Weekly, he was a business reporter for The Ledger in Lakeland, Fla., and the Winston-Salem Journal in North Carolina, an assistant business editor at the Gaston Gazette in North Carolina and economics reporting intern for Bloomberg News in Washington. He served as chief editor of the Kyiv Post between January and May 2008.

PRODUCTION STAFF
  • David (Darko) Bushnell officially joined the staff of The Weekly as layout artist as of January 1, 2008, after working on the newspaper’s production team since October 1, 2007. He has experience in newspaper layout, having served as production manager for the Sheaf, the student newspaper at the University of Saskatchewan, and for the McGill Tribune, the newspaper of the Students’ Society of McGill University in Montreal. Mr. Bushnell holds a B.S. in computer science from the University of Saskatchewan and majored in drama and theater at McGill.

  • Awilda Rolon, The Weekly’s lone typesetter and back-up layout person, joined the staff in December 1980. She has been with The Weekly ever since, taking on more and more duties, including the role of coordinator of The Weekly’s annual scholarship issue. She also prepares materials that appear on The Weekly’s archive homepage – a mammoth task that includes typesetting and scanning materials published prior to The Weekly’s computerization.
