WASHINGTON – Valeriy Chaly, ambassador of Ukraine to the United States, was decorated with the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland during a ceremony at the Polish Embassy on May 23.

President Bronislaw Komorowski of Poland honored Ambassador Chaly with this high state award in recognition of his outstanding achievements in promoting friendly Ukrainian-Polish relations.

Polish Ambassador to the U.S. Ryszard Schnepf decorated Ambassador Chaly with the award. In his remarks, Ambassador Schnepf stressed that the honoree is a highly professional diplomat and statesman, noting his achievements as the deputy head of the Presidential Administration of Ukraine under President Petro Poroshenko and his role in strengthening the strategic partnership between Ukraine and Poland.

“The history of Polish-Ukrainian relations is long and full of momentous events,” explained Ambassador Schnepf, welcoming guests to the Embassy. “In 1991 it was Poland who was the first country to recognize the independence of Ukraine. Today, in the face of unprecedented Russian aggression against that country, we wish to once more be a source of support for our neighbor, to be close to Ukraine and Ukrainians.”

Accepting the award, Ambassador Chaly thanked Poland for supporting Ukraine in difficult times to counter Russian aggression. He emphasized that receiving this award in Washington has special significance for him and he noted the critical role that U.S. support has on the stability of Eastern Europe, especially in light of threats emanating from Russia.

Ambassador Chaly further commented that the future of Europe depends on the cooperation of countries, including Poland and Ukraine, especially in the area of security.

The ceremony was honored by the presence of the representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited to the United States, as well as representatives of the U.S. National Security Council, and the Ukrainian and Polish diasporas.
