Iryna Varvynets passes off to Yuliya Dzhima.

Ukraine-born skater Olena (Aljona) Savchenko and French skater Bruno Massot won gold in the pairs free skate event at the Olympic Games in PyeongChang. The duo scored 159.31 points, setting a world record. Savchenko’s partnership with Massot began in March 2014. Savchenko and Massot have won the German Figure Skating Championships in 2016 and 2018.

Born in Obukhiv, near Kyiv, she competed for Ukraine since her early career achievements at junior world competitions beginning in 1998 until the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. Her partner at that time was Stanislav Morozov. Citing her frustration with the lack of support for skaters in Ukraine, Savchenko decided to move to Germany.

Her other partners in Olympic competitions included Robin Szolkowy, representing Germany and earning bronze medals at the 2010 Games in Vancouver and 2014 in Sochi. German-born Szolkowy and Savchenko have been five-time world champions (five gold, two silver and one bronze in the period 2008-2014), four European champions (four gold, three silver in 2007-2011), four-time Grand Prix Final champions (four gold, one silver and three bronze in 2007-2013), and eight-time German national champions (2004-2009, 2011, 2014).
