NORTH PORT, Fla. – The Ukrainian American Club of Southwest Florida, headed by President Daria Tomashosky of North Port, Fla., held its 11th Scholarship Awards Luncheon at St. Andrew’s Ukrainian Religious and Cultural Center (known as Oseredok) in North Port.

After a brief business meeting and a delicious lunch, Ms. Tomashosky called upon Victor Lisnyczyj of North Port, chairman of the Scholarship Committee, to chair the affair.

Mr. Lisnyczyj introduced all 10 past recipients of scholarships by displaying their photographs via a PowerPoint presentation and reading the letters received from some of them. The letters were read by Scholarship Committee members Lidia Bilous, Dr. Katherine Steciuk and Gene Tomashosky.

Each scholarship applicant must write a 500-word essay on a Ukrainian theme. This year’s theme was: “Discus the illegal Russian Federation invasion and subsequent annexation of the Ukrainian territory of Crimea in 2014 with disregard to the protections afforded Ukrainian sovereignty in the Budapest Memorandum.”

This year’s scholarship recipient, Mihajlo Dosen, a North Port High School senior, was introduced and asked to read his winning essay, which dealt with the Budapest Memorandum. His essay was very well written and thoughtfully presented.

His academic awards include the National Honor Society, top 10th percentile in academic achievement at North Port High School, first place in science technology and math, Award of Excellence in the Music Performance Association, nomination for Youth Leadership Forum in Medicine, president of the Robotics Club. His community service and extracurricular activities took him beyond the classroom. The awards and achievements that he has earned and received reflected his skills, involvements and commitments. Mr. Dosen is planning to earn a bachelor’s degree in business at the University of Central Florida. He was presented an award certificate and $1,000.

An additional award of $250 was presented to Marco Gusman, last year’s scholarship recipient, who attends Florida State University.

The Ukrainian American Club was organized over 20 years ago, to encourage interest in Ukraine and its people among the larger American public. The club’s objectives are to provide an opportunity to learn about Ukrainian culture and to promote public interest in Ukrainian customs, history, arts and language. Scholarship Committee members agreed that this year’s scholarship recipient exceeded the Ukrainian American Club’s expectation.
