The Kremlin’s effort to affect the outcome of the 2016 U.S. presidential elections has provoked one consequence Moscow has long wanted – the demoralization of the American elite – but it is having other less welcome ones on both that elite and the Russian one, something only becoming clear, Liliya Shevtsova says.

The statement below was released by the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America on November 14.

On Monday, November 13, a Ukrainian American activist was arrested outside the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. A member of the National Cathedral community, Alexa Chopivsky had been vocal in her disappointment over the cathedral hosting “A Concert for Unity” organized by the Russian Embassy. The concert featured conductor Valery Gergiev and pianist Denis Matsuev, both well-known supporters of Vladimir Putin and his imperial ambitions in Ukraine. Not only did both artists sign a well-publicized letter in support of Putin’s actions in Ukraine after the occupation of Crimea, Gergiev has touted his friendship with Putin by performing in Russian-occupied territory in Georgia and in the Russian-occupied city of Palmyra in Syria while Putin’s forces were actively shelling civilians in Aleppo in 2016.

KYIV – Among the first people to pinpoint that Russia engages in lies on an industrial scale packaged as actual news was Yevhen Fedchenko, 41, director of the Mohyla School of Journalism.

He and his colleagues noticed the practice during the Revolution of Dignity that ended in February 2014. That month, disgraced Kremlin-backed President Viktor Yanukovych fled to Russia after leaving behind a dry treasury and a graft-infested, dysfunctional government, along with 100 civilians killed by his law enforcement personnel.

OTTAWA – Canada’s Official Opposition Conservative Party has joined the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) in calling for a Canadian-led United Nations peacekeeping mission in eastern Ukraine.

“The defense of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity should be a priority for Canada’s government on the international stage,” said Opposition Leader Andrew Scheer on November 9 when he announced that a Conservative-led Canadian government would call for such a mission that “would allow Ukraine to restore control over its eastern border with Russia” and ensure the Russian military stays out of Ukraine.
