U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, on June 13 submitted the following statement for the Senate record on President Donald Trump’s comments regarding the government of the Russian Federation rejoining the G-7. Earlier that week, Sen. Menendez also introduced an amendment to the annual defense policy legislation calling on the president to immediately retract his statement at the G-7 and to clearly state that the Russian Federation will never join the G-7 until it ends its illegal occupation of Crimea. Below are excerpts from the senator’s statement.
TORONTO – The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) said it is “appalled by the suggestion made on June 8 by U.S. President Donald Trump, and supported by Italy’s Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, that the Russian Federation be reinstated as a member of the Group of Seven.”
A news released from the UWC noted: “In June 2014, the Russian Federation was excluded from the G-8 summit that was originally scheduled to be held in Sochi, Russian Federation, and later moved in another format, without the Russian Federation, to Brussels. The decision was made by G-7 leaders in unanimous condemnation of the Russian Federation’s military aggression against Ukraine and the illegal invasion of Crimea, and as a reaffirmation of their support for the people of Ukraine and the fundamental principle of the territorial integrity of independent countries.”
