HUNTER, N.Y. – The weather couldn’t have been better for the 61st annual ski races of the Carpathian Ski Club held here at Hunter Mountain on Saturday, March 7. And 81 racers of all ages – from preschoolers to seniors – took advantage of the excellent ski conditions to take a couple of runs down the official NASTAR course.

Later that evening, the ski club held an awards dinner at Hunter Mountain’s Copper Tree Restaurant, with the ski resort’s owner, David Slutzky, and his wife, Jean, in attendance. Mr. Slutzky graciously welcomed all the skiers and their families to this annual event that brings them together on Hunter’s slopes.

The evening’s program was conducted by Vira Popel, president of the Carpathian Ski Club, which is known by its Ukrainian acronym as KLK. She was assisted by Orest Fedash, KLK skiing director, and Eri Palydowycz, KLK vice-president.

Trophies and medals were presented to the top skiers in each age group, and special awards went to the fastest male and female skiers, an honor that includes possession of traveling trophies with their names inscribed on them (no repeat winners are allowed). Julian Fedorciw and Christa Kozak were recognized as the fastest of the 2015 races.

The KLK Family Award, presented by Ambassador Yuriy Sergeyev of Ukraine’s Mission to the United Nations and his wife, Nataliya, went this year to the Silver family – Maria Silver and her children Christina and Thomas.

In conclusion, Ms. Popel thanked the sponsors of the 2015 KLK ski races, Self Reliance New York Federal Credit Union and the Ukrainian National Federal Credit Union, as well as Mr. Fedash and Eugene Stakhiv for donating the trophies, and the Bilous Family Foundation for a substantial financial contribution.
