MELBOURNE, Australia – In reaction to the bushfires that have ravaged Australia, the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organizations (AFUO) put out a call during the Julian calendar Christmas for the Kolyada for Australia Bushfire campaign, whose target was $50,000.
The Ukrainian Australian community demonstrated its unity of purpose and focus, and succeeded in raising $67,000 during the relatively brief Christmas period.
On Saturday, January 18, in Hobart, where the smallest Ukrainian Australian community was celebrating its 70th anniversary of settlement in Tasmania, the AFUO held a national meeting with the community and presented a check for the funds raised (at that point, the amount was over $63,000) to the Australian Red Cross.

The decision by Russia’s Prosecutor General to declare the Ukrainian World Congress an “undesirable” organization that poses a threat to Russia’s national security is a further attempt to eliminate Ukrainian community life in Russia, said the UWC. The July 11 announcement highlights Russian President Vladimir Putin’s fear that the democratic principles championed by the Ukrainian people will bring an end to his kleptocratic regime.

BAT YAM, Israel – The Ukrainian Cultural Center in Israel recently presented an evening dedicated to the memory of the prominent Ukrainian public and Church figure Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky (1865-1944).
Hennadiy Nadolenko, ambassador of Ukraine to Israel, noted that Sheptytsky “made an important contribution to establishing relations between the Ukrainian and Jewish peoples when he risked his life saving Jews during the second world war.”

TORONTO – The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) on May 7 condemned the violence committed against representatives of the Ukrainian community on May 5 in Lisbon by participants of the Russian initiative “Bessmertnyi Polk,” or “Immortal Regiment,” during a rally commemorating the so-called Great Patriotic War (1941-1945) in which the USSR fought Nazi Germany.

STRASBROUG, France – The European Parliament has awarded imprisoned Ukrainian film director Oleh Sentsov its 2018 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought.

International organization’s XI Congress held in Kyiv

KYIV – Two hundred forty-eight delegates representing 26 countries participated in the XI Ukrainian World Congress, as well as events marking the 85th anniversary of the Holodomor, in Kyiv on November 24-27.

NEW YORK – Several honorees from the United States received the Ukrainian World Congress’s highest accolade, the St. Volodymyr the Great Medal, during the UWC congress held in Kyiv in late November. 

KYIV – On November 21, the outgoing president of the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC), Eugene Czolij, spoke at an event dedicated to the opening of the Chair of History of the Ukrainian World Community at the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.
