OSPREY, Fla. – The Ukrainian American community of North Port, Fla., and vicinity took part in Earth Day at Oscar Scherer State Park in Osprey, Fla., on April 21.

An exhibit of books, journals, flyers and other materials on the Chornobyl accident that happened on April 26, 1986, was arranged on a table under a canopy with the sign “Chornobyl Nuclear Disaster.”

The display was put up by Nellia Lechman and Vira Bodnaruk with the help of Dr. Bohdan Bodnaruk. There were handouts on the Chornobyl disaster, as well as information about Ukraine and its current fight with pro-Russian forces in the Donbas region.

Throughout the day, information was supplied by volunteers at the Chornobyl table to the interested public, which also included children. The visitors had a beautiful day to enjoy many exhibits on ecology, listen to folk music, swim in the lake or go kayaking.

Volunteers who took part this year besides the aforementioned persons were members of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America Branch 56, and the Ukrainian Language Society: Lesia Popel (president of Branch 56), Ivanka Olesnycky, Oksana Lew, Tania Silecky, Myrosia Futey and Judge Bohdan Futey.

A requiem service for the victims of Chornobyl was held at St. Andrew’s Ukrainian Church in North Port on Sunday, April 29.

Vira Bodnaruk is president of the Ukrainian American Community of SW Florida.
