I spent the summer of 1943 on a farm owned by my parents in Parkville, Mich. Mother loved movies, so on many a Friday afternoon mom, my sister Vera and I would trek over to highway M60 and wait to wave down the Detroit to Chicago Greyhound bus. It took us to Three Rivers, Mich., which had a movie theater. As soon as the movie ended, we’d walk to a restaurant where the Chicago to Detroit Greyhound passengers were enjoying a rest stop. The driver agreed to take us to the road which led to Parkville, Mich. Mom always found a way to watch a movie.

Ukrainian Running Club New York marks 30th anniversary of Ukraine’s renewed independence with Vyshyvanka Run

NEW YORK – Every year since 2015, Ukrainian Running Club New York has celebrated Ukrainian Independence Day with a Vyshyvanka Run. As the name implies, participants must run or walk a certain distance while wearing a traditional Ukrainian embroidered shirts (vyshyvanka) or a T-shirt made to look like an embroidered shirt.

As a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, last year’s Vyshyvanka Run took place virtually. Instead of holding a run in one location, this year Ukrainian Running Club New York took the added pandemic precaution of holding the event in three different locations: Central Park in Manhattan, Prospect Park in Brooklyn, N.Y., and for the first time Liberty Park in Jersey City, N.J.

Selfreliance FCU holds 70th Annual Meeting, reports strong financial status

CHICAGO – The Selfreliance Federal Credit Union (SFCU) held its 70th Annual Meeting at the organization’s home office in Chicago.  It reported assets exceeding $700 million, a net income of $1.3 million in 2020 and capital approaching $115 million, the SFCU leadership reported during the meeting.

The Chairman of the Board of Directors Oleh Karawan called to order the meeting, which was held on August 4 with social distancing and occupancy restrictions as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

UECC unveils newly renovated Cheremosh Room

JENKINTOWN, Pa. – The Board of Directors of the Ukrainian Educational and Cultural Center (UECC) hosted a preview showing of its newly renovated space, formally known as the Clubroom, which from now on will be known as the Cheremosh Room.

Eleven organizations and 47 individuals were invited to a sneak peek of the room prior to its opening to the general public.  The invitees were a select group of top UECC donors, each having gifted the Center at least $10,000 since its inception in 1980.

Manchester City star Oleksandr Zin­chen­ko is more careful than most when reminiscing about his eventful past. He was understandably wary of saying something which could have inflamed tensions back home in Ukraine, even as he prepared for the biggest match of his career in late May – the Champions League final. Zinchenko freely admitted it was the “toughest moment” of his life when he fled his native land in 2014 when war broke out in eastern Ukraine.

Ukraine to host two international competitions in 2023

Ukraine has won the right to host the 2023 FIFA World Cup for school children and the 2023 Winter World Gymnasium. The decisions were made by the International School Sports Federation and announced by Ukraine’s Minister of Education and Science Serhii Shkarlet on September 17.

Threat to judicial reform defused after meeting of G-7 ambassadors, judicial officials, members of parliament

KYIV – Ukraine’s attempt to reform its unruly judicial system reached a pivotal point on September 13 when the body that disciplines judges failed to appoint three of its own members to a corresponding ethics committee that is supposed to vet members of the High Council of Justice (HCJ).

The body, which mainly hires and fires judges, didn’t appoint three judges to the committee who were to be joined by three international experts that were chosen on September 10 jointly by a delegation of officials from the U.S., the European Union, Germany, Canada, the United Kingdom, the Council of Europe, the U.N. Development Program and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Kyiv seeks upgraded military hardware as Russia concludes massive Zapad-2021 war games

KYIV – Russia’s massive quadrennial Zapad (west) war games ended on September 16 as Belarusian authorities reported that shots were fired at a border sign post from Volyn Oblast in Ukraine.

The Zapad-2021 drills, held partly with military forces in Belarus, included 200,000 soldiers, 240 artillery installations, 290 tanks, 80 aircraft and 15 vessels, Russia’s Defense Ministry said.

Zelenskyy says Ukraine is determined to host Winter Olympics

LVIV – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he is determined to see his country host the Winter Olympics.

Speaking during a celebration that marked the 30th anniversary of the creation of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine on September 11, Mr. Zelenskyy said  he believes there will come a day when the Olympic Games will be held in Ukraine.

UAB Steering Committee releases statement following Ukrainian President Zelenskyy’s White House meeting

The following statement was released by Ukrainian Americans for Biden (UAB) on September 14 following the working visit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to the United States.  

The meeting between Ukrainian Presi­dent Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. President Joe Biden at the White House, as well as President Zelenskyy’s meetings with key Cabinet officials and Congress­ional leaders in Washington was a solid success with tangible results. The most important outcome: U.S.-Ukraine relations are back on solid ground. The agreements signed and decisions made during the working visit advance U.S.-Ukraine relations. Ukrainian Americans for Biden (UAB) welcomes the return to normalcy and stability in a relationship both exploited and neglected by the previous administration.
